Windows Phone 8 Updates Surface, but 'Blue' Delayed Until 2014

Microsoft revealed new details on Thursday about what to expect in its next round of Windows Phone 8 updates. Although these minor updates are expected to appear in the next few weeks, rumor has it that the larger "Windows Blue" updates won't arrive until 2014.

The upcoming update, which is known as General Distribution General Release 2 (or more succinctly as GDR2), will come with a variety of minor improvements to Windows Phone 8 eight months after its launch.

But according to The Verge, dealing with these bug fixes has slowed down the arrival of the more feature-rich Windows Phone "Blue" update. Microsoft initially planned to introduce updates more often, but issues with chipsets and a bug associated with the identification of devices on a network are causing delays.

The announced GDR2 updates fix bugs related to Xbox Music — with the promises of "more accurate metadata (such as song and album information)" and other performance issues. It will also be "easier to select, download, and pin music," the company said.

Other new additions include FM radio, a way to stay top of data usage with Data Sense, improved camera functionality for the lens opening, updated Skype performance, CalDAV and CardDAV support for Gmail and Internet Explorer with HTML 5 compatibility. For a full look at what to expect, click here.

The larger "Blue" update will likely come with a notification center, built-in app updates and better multitasking capabilities. The next iteration (GDR3) will also likely include quad-core chipsets and support for 5 and 6-inch devices with 1080p resolutions, the report said.
